Man Arrested on DUI Suspicion in Fatal Crash in Santa Clara

A man was arrested in a suspected DUI collision that killed a 65-year-old woman east of Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara over the weekend, police said Tuesday.

Nestor Alegria-Hernandez, 34, of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI causing injury, police Lt. Dan Moreno said.

The woman who died was identified as Sunnyvale resident Carmencita Masangkay Manaois, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The collision was reported at Lick Mill Boulevard and Tasman Drive around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Moreno said.

Masangkay Manaois was alone behind the wheel of a 2000 Honda Accord heading north on Lick Mill Boulevard and turned left to head west on Tasman Drive, where she was struck by an eastbound 2001 Ford F-150 driven by Alegria-Hernandez, according to Moreno.

The 65-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Moreno said.

Alegria-Hernandez was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and was later released, the lieutenant said.

A passenger in the truck suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital where he was treated and released.

The truck blocked Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light-rail tracks at the intersection. The collision disrupted service along Route 902 Mountain

View-Winchester between the Great America and Baypointe stations, VTA officials said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police traffic investigator Dave Machado at 408-615-4764.
