A man fell off an overpass onto southbound Interstate 880 south in Hayward early Wednesday morning and was fatally struck by an oncoming truck, police said.
The CHP got reports about the pedestrian struck on the highway between Industrial Boulevard and Whipple Avenue around 4:45 a.m. According to CHP, the driver of the big rig felt a vibration and pulled over. Traffic control officers then blocked off the two right lanes as well as the on-ramp onto southbound I-880 as investigators tried to collect evidence.
The death investigation caused traffic to back up for miles during the morning commute. CHP didn’t reopen the lanes until around 7 a.m.
Hayward police have taken over the investigation because of the possibility that something criminal took place on the overpass, which is under the city's jurisdiction.
“We have to determine exactly what happened – if it was a crime that occurred on the overpass versus whether it was a suicide, could go either way right now,” said CHP Sgt. Leonard Tomboc.
Hayward police are looking for witnesses who could help with the investigation.
