87-Year-Old Man Killed in Car Accident Near San Francisco Zoo

An 87-year-old man was fatally struck by a car near the San Francisco Zoo Monday morning has been identified as Louis Van Velzen, police said.

The collision was reported at 6:57 a.m. near Sloat Boulevard and 43rd Avenue. Velzen's daughter, who only wanted to give her name as "Louisa," said it's a very dangerous intersection, adding that her father had been trying to catch a bus at the time. She said her father was 87, though police had originally said he was 75,

Police said the lighting was difficult because it was dawn.

Police said the driver - a teacher's aide at Washington High School - stayed at the scene and cooperated. She also didn't appear to have been speeding and was "quite shaken up," police said.

Police said Velzen, a San Francisco resident, did not appear to be in the crosswalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Louisa said she hopes more people will "drive carefully."
