An elderly man shot and killed himself near a group of children in a popular Palo Alto park, according to the Palo Alto Daily News.
Police received "multiple 911 calls" at 10 a.m. on Thursday from Mitchell Park, the newspaper reported. The man, who was not identified, was found "dead on the scene" with a single gunshot wound, the newspaper reported. A handgun was found near his body.
Up to 50 people were in the park at the time of the shooting, the newspaper reported, including a group of children attending a private summer camp. It's not known if children saw the suicide itself, but "several saw the aftermath," according to a police spokeswoman.
News of the suicide was disseminated to the public only to make clear that the death was a suicide and not a gun-related murder, police said.
