A suspect wanted in a double homicide was released early from jail due to overcrowding, Fresno County authorities say. According to the local sheriff's office, 19-year-old Jose Alfredo Reyes was arrested last Sunday by the California Highway Patrol for auto theft and was booked into the Fresno County Jail. On Monday, he was released due to jail overcrowding. Reyes is now wanted for the murder of Gary and Sandra DeBartolo in Kerman that happened on Wednesday.
Last Wednesday, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department received a tip that the couple may be growing marijuana. The home was under surveillance around the time of the shooting. Three men were seen entering the home and leaving a minute later. 61-year-old Gary DeBartolo called 911 to report his 62-year-old wife, Sandra was murdered. The line then went dead. When police arrived, they found the couple face down both shot in the head. Marijuana plants were found in the home.
When the suspects left the home deputies chased them in a high-speed pursuit. The chase went from Kerman into Fresno where it crashed. Dawn Singh, 34, and Leroy Anthony Johnson, 42, were arrested.
Singh and Johnson have been charged with two counts each of murder and home invasion, leaving Jose Reyes still outstanding.
Reyes was last seen fleeing the scene of the crime and is considered “armed and dangerous”.
