Man Swims in Off-Limits Lake Merritt in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A Washington state man has been detained for a psychiatric evaluation after he was found swimming in an Oakland lake that is known for attracting litter.

The East Bay Times reports that on Tuesday the man was seen pulling a suitcase through Lake Merritt, sometimes doing the back stroke, before getting out on his own accord.

The man-made lake is used by rowers, sail boaters and gondoliers but swimming is prohibited. The murky water doesn't often attract swimmers, but it does attract people looking to get rid of trash ranging from cigarette butts to underwear to an ankle monitor like the ones used by people on probation.
