Man in Wheelchair Injured in Palo Alto Hit-and-Run

Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down a hit-and-run driver who struck and injured a man in a wheelchair in Palo Alto early Saturday morning.

The victim, a wheelchair-bound Palo Alto resident in his 50s, was hit in the 1300 block of University Avenue around 4:35 a.m., police said.

The victim was heading west on University Avenue on the road's shoulder when the car came from behind and hit him, sending him and his belongings onto some grass near the sidewalk, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he remains today with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. His wheelchair broke in the collision, police said.

After hitting the victim, the driver sped off but then returned and drove by the scene slowly, according to police. He then left again and was last seen heading west on University Avenue.

Police said the suspect vehicle is a white Toyota Yaris made sometime between 2007 and 2011. Investigators said there is likely damage to the front passenger side of the car.

The driver is only described as male.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Palo Alto's 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413 or send an anonymous tip to paloalto@tipnow.org.
