A San Mateo County man is on trial this week on charges that he dropped his 17-month-old son into a hot oven while trying to teach him about its dangers.
Prosecutors say 20-year-old Gregory Colver Jr. had turned on the oven in his Daly City home to make pizza on Dec. 28 and saw his son banging his hand on the open door. To teach the child a lesson, prosecutors say, Colver lifted the boy's legs into the oven but lost his grip and dropped him onto the hot coils.
The toddler suffered second- and third-degree burns on his legs.
The San Mateo Daily Journal reports that Colver initially told authorities that the child turned on the oven and crawled inside while he slept.
Colver has pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges.
