Police have identified a machete-wielding man who was arrested this morning after he barricaded himself inside his south San Jose apartment for nearly five hours as 44-year-old Scott William McKinnon.
The standoff began at about 2:45 a.m. after a security guard at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Capitol Village Circle called police to report that a resident had become confrontational when approached about the loud music he was playing, police Officer Jose Garcia said.
Officers went to the resident's apartment and when they arrived he was also uncooperative with them, and brandished a machete, Garcia said. That resident has been identified as McKinnon.
More officers responded and worked to convince McKinnon to surrender. Meanwhile, neighboring apartments were evacuated.
During the standoff, McKinnon occasionally opened the door and talked to the officers, sometimes throwing bottles at them, Garcia said.
At about 7:30 a.m. he came out of the apartment holding a bottle of alcohol, according to Garcia.
"He was refusing to comply with their commands for him to surrender, and at one point he actually went toward one of the K-9 officers with a bottle in his hand and he was confrontational," Garcia said.
At that point, Garcia said, the K-9 officer released a police dog on McKinnon, allowing officers to take him into custody.
McKinnon was injured by the dog and was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
He is being held without bail in Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a deadly weapon at a peace officer, making criminal threats, and threatening or assaulting a peace officer.
