A 66-year-old inmate who escaped from a Northern California prison has been recaptured after a 26-hour manhunt, authorities said Monday.

Donald Silks was taken into custody Sunday outside Susanville, not far from the California Correctional Center, where he escaped a medium-security area a day earlier.

Officials say Silks was spotted by an off-duty corrections department employee who learned about his escape from news accounts. Silks was still wearing his prison uniform when he was recaptured.

The Sonoma County man was sent to prison last December for being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He was not scheduled to be paroled until June 2013.
