Three agencies in Marin County are hosting free waste tire recycling events this month.
The tires left outdoors fill with water that draw breeding mosquitoes that could spread West Nile Virus and pose a fire threat, authorites said.
Conservation Corps North Bay, Marin Sanitary Service and Waste Management Inc. will take the tires for free between Oct. 12 and 26.
The collection centers are the Marin Resource Recovery Center in San Rafael, Redwood Landfill near Novato and the Marin County Department of Public Works Corporation Yard in Nicasio.
The collected tires will be recycled into crumb rubber that can be used in new tires, floor material, asphalt and engineering products for road construction or erosion control, Marin County Public Works Department officials said.
The collection is limited to Marin County residents and excludes businesses. Residents are allowed up to nine car, truck and motorcycle tires with or without rims per trip to the centers.
The three agencies hope to collect 4,000 tires this year. The Public Works Department has collected more than 30,000 tires at these events over the past nine years, Assistant Director Patrick Echols said.

The Marin Resource Recovery Center at 565 Jacoby St. in San Rafael is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Redwood Landfill at 8950 Redwood Highway off U.S. Highway 101 north of Novato is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Marin County DPW Corporation Yard at 5600 Nicasio Valley Road, Nicasio is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Tires in good condition might be reused.
