Spending priorities may be delaying the appointment of an unnamed law enforcer to replace Police Chief Heather Fong.
With San Francisco's weather cooling off for summer, the budget battle at City Hall is heating up with Mayor Gavin Newsom inflamed by the Board of Supervisors.
At issue is a decision by the supes to slash money for the police, fire and sheriff departments as part of an interim budget meant to hold the city over until the final budget is approved.
The cuts to public safety agencies were made by the board in order to restore funding to public health and social support programs which was slashed in the mayor's proposed budget.
That has the still undeclared successor to Fong thinking twice about moving to San Francisco and taking the job as top cop.
"It's a very dangerous game. I don't know what they're trying to do. I am stunned. Thank God we have a mayor," Newsom told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Board President David Chiu responded with surprise. "When he calms down, I look forward to working with him to develop a budget that reflects our shared policy priorities."
