Medical Marijuana Delivery Services Avoiding the Law

Delivery-only medical marijuana services are able to avoid fees and taxes by claiming they are based outside of San Francisco.

Over a dozen delivery services are offering to bring you medical marijuana in San Francisco.

No taxes, fees or permits required.

Medical marijuana dispensaries are required to get a permit from the Department of Public Health to distribute marijuana. Three delivery services have this license, but many more advertise the service in print and online, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

Only The Green Cross, Divinity Tree and Medithrive have medical cannabis dispensary permits, which require hearings, background checks and fees of up to $12,000 or more to acquire. Delivery services that claim to be headquartered outside of town avoid paying this fee.

Many delivery services with 415 area codes and San Francisco business licenses do not have these permits, including Foggy Daze and Nature's Relief. City officials know about this issue, but say they don't have the resources to check and see if these businesses are in fact located outside of the city -- and even if they are, they don't have the resources to track them down and impose penalties.
