Meg Whitman Joins HP

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might want to give Meg Whitman a call if he is serious about getting a job again.

The former Republican governor hopeful is one of five new directors set to join the Hewlett-Packard board of directors.

The world's largest computer maker announced Whitman's appointment after the close of the bell Thursday.

Whitman will be joined by Shumeet Banerji, CEO of Booz & Company; Gary Reiner, former CIO of General Electric; Patricia Russo, former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent; and Dominique Senequier, CEO of AXA Private Equity.

"Meg Whitman is a true visionary and thought leader who brings to the HP board unique experience in developing transformative business models, building global brands and driving sustained growth and expansion," Raymond J. Lane, chairman of the board of directors, said in a statement.

HP is trying to clear its board of directors still loyal to former Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd, who joined rival Oracle after resigning from HP among controversy. Five board members are being forced to step down.

The company is currently facing a lawsuit from its shareholders for awarding Hurd as much as $53 million in severance and other benefits.

Whitman was eBay's president and CEO for 10 years from 1998 to 2008. She made an unsuccessful bid to become California's governor last fall.
