Memorial Account Set Up for Family of Andrew Silva, Marine Killed in Suspected Fremont DUI Crash

A memorial account has been set up for the family of a 23-year-old U.S. Marine killed by a suspected drunken driver in Fremont on Tuesday.

Union City resident Andrew Silva was riding his motorcycle near Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road where he was fatally struck by a Mini Cooper early Tuesday morning, police said.

The vehicle struck Silva before hitting a utility pole and fence, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

The driver was identified as Alexander Yohn, 23, of Emeryville. Yohn allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was arrested, Bosques said.

The accident took place near the Fremont Bank Brookvale office. A memorial has been set up outside the bank with flowers, candles and pictures of Silva.

Fremont Bank has established an account for Silva's wife and son. Donations can be made at any Fremont Bank branch or by mail to:

Fremont Bank
Attn: Andrew Silva Memorial Account
P.O. Box #8170
Fremont, CA 94537-8170

Checks should be made payable to "Andrew Silva Memorial."

A memorial run also is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, starting at Cabello Park in Union City and heading to the intersection where Silva was killed on Decoto Road and Fremont Boulevard in Fremont. Runners are asked to make a $5 donation.

Mountain Mikes Pizza will also contribute 20 percent of its sales to the Andrew Silva memorial fund beginning 11 a.m. Saturday to 9 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is located at 3952 Washington Blvd. in Fremont.

Silva graduated from James Logan High School in Union City in 2009 and returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan in February, authorities said.

Many have taken to Twitter to express their condolences for Silva.

One tweet reads, "Heartbreaking. What a horrible accident. I feel for the family."

Another person tweeted Wednesday, "Sleep well, my friend. The world was a better place with you in it."
