Menlo Park Police Fatally Shoot Burglary Suspect

Police shot and killed a burglary suspect who allegedly pulled a gun as he fled from officers in Menlo Park Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers received a report at 12:33 p.m. of a suspicious person on Willow Place, a short cul-de-sac off of Willow Road between Middlefield Road and Waverly Street. Office buildings along the street house venture capital and startup firms.

NBC Bay Area’s chopper flying over the scene captured images of what appeared to be a body covered in a yellow tarp and debris strewn about the roadway.

“Upon arrival, officers found a male suspect involved in a burglary in progress. A foot pursuit ensued of the suspect, and a Taser device was deployed to stop the suspect. The male suspect pulled out a gun and possibly took aim at the officers,” the department said in an email statement.

It’s not clear whether the suspect fired his weapon, according to police, but officers shot the suspect and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer was taken to the hospital for “non-life threatening injuries.”

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call the Menlo Park Police Department at (650) 330-6300.
