Microsoft Imposter Steals Credit Card Info: Sheriff

The Napa County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam where a caller claims to be a Microsoft tech support employee.

The caller, who is actually a hacker, gains the victim's trust and attempts to steal credit card numbers and other personal information from the victim, sheriff's officials said. The impostor sometimes damages the victim's computer with viruses and spyware.

The sheriff's office is advising residents that Microsoft does not make cold calls, and that they should hang up if they receive an unsolicited tech support call.
