Midwest Tornadoes Cause Bay Area Flight Delays

Flights to the Bay Area have been delayed several hours due to tornadoes that have ripped through the Midwest.

The severe weather in the Midwest is causing flight delays in the Bay Area Sunday night.

Some travelers are arriving at San Francisco International Airport several hours later than they had planned.

Most of the delays at SFO have been for arriving flight, not departing.

On average, flights from Chicago have been running between one-to-two hours late.

But there is a flight scheduled to arrive in San Francisco at 8:37 p.m. that was originally supposed to get there at 1:30 p.m, which is more than seven hours late.

United Airlines has a hub in Chicago, and so many of its connecting flights to SFO have experienced delays.

Many of the passengers who arrived here from Chicago tonight did not realize the scope of the damage or that dozens of tornados had touched down in Illinois, leveling towns and causing deaths and injuries.

A few of them described what the conditions were like at the airport before they took off Sunday from the Midwest.

"I was standing by the window and I saw the rain coming down sideways," said Stephanie Higgy, who flew home from Chicago. "Raining like hell, really hard"

A traveler who lives in Chicago, Tejas Patel, also had to bear the flight delays.

"Thunderstorms, tornado warnings--our flight was delayed by two hours, so pretty rough," he said.

As the storm system has moved east, SFO has had delays showing up on the screens for arriving flights from New York, and other East Coast cities. The effects from this severe weather system are still being felt by travelers.

At least five people were killed and 41 others were hurt as the series of tornadoes battered Illinois Sunday.
