Mild Winter Means Earliest Opening for Tahoe Golf Course

The mild winter has taken a toll on Sierra ski resorts but the lack of snow has some golfers hitting the links much earlier than usual at a course with a long history on Lake Tahoe's north shore.

Old Brockway opened its nine holes for play Saturday at Kings Beach, California near the Nevada line.

Owner Lane Lewis says it's the earliest opening in the history of the course dating to the 1920s.

Bing Crosby hosted his "clambake'' and golf tourney for friends at Old Brockway in 1934 and 1935 before moving it to Pebble Beach.

About 50 golfers teed off Saturday.

Lewis told the Sierra Sun the course usually opens in early April. The latest opening was May 27, 1982.

The previous earliest opening was March 15 last year.
