Milpitas Police Shoot Suspect During Traffic Stop, I-680 Closed at Calaveras Boulevard

An officer-involved shooting in Milpitas injured a 27-year-old suspect from San Jose, which shut down a portion of Interstate Highway 680 early Friday morning, during some sort of traffic stop.

It was the Milpitas Police Department's first officer-involved shooting of the year, and there were none in 2015, according to Sgt. Frank Morales.

The suspect had three no-bail warrants, Morales said, who didn't elaborate on what they were for. He also did not say what prompted the shooting. And it's unclear if the suspect was armed. Police did say they recovered "a large amount of methamphetamines" and cash from the scene.

Police said they took the suspect to the hospital, but did not say in what condition. The traffic stop was initiated at 12:51 a.m. at the Executive Inn parking lot on Dempsey Road. That's when one officer fired at least one round at him, Morales said.

Lt. Raj Maharaj said anyone someone is shot it's important for the department to "get all the facts."

The shooting shut down both directions of East Calaveras Boulevard at Interstate Highway 680 for a while.
