Call About AK-47 Scares Moffett Field

A call regarding someone with an AK-47 - or two - on Thursday put a scare into federal officials at Moffett Field in Mountain View.

The call referred to someone driving a white suburban at Moffett Field with two AK-47s. NBC Bay Area has confirmed the 129th Rescue Wing of the California National Guard responded by locking down their portion of Moffett.

The wing was asked to shelter-in-place about 1:30 p.m., multiple sources told the Investigative Unit.

But NASA Ames police thoroughly checked out the base, and didn't find anything, according to NASA spokesman Michael Mewhinney. Sources said the call was deemed to be a hoax.

Mewhinny declined to offer any other details.

Another source said the scene was cleared by 2 p.m.
