Capitola village cut off again by flood waters

For the first time since 2006, the Lexington Reservoir in the South Bay spilled its banks.
Just as business owners and locals were getting a handle on the clean up efforts in Capitola Village, more flood waters rushed into the area Saturday.
The problem was too much additional rain in the Noble Gulch Creek.
The city of Capitola said crews had been clearing a collapsed culvert since Friday, but more rainfall Saturday morning became too much and the crews. They had to abandon their posts and get to higher ground after the creek quickly surpassed flood stage.
A voluntary evacuation was put into effect in the Capitola Village until further notice and all roads that lead into the village were closed. Businesses and local homeowners started from the beginning in their clean up efforts, but many said they were worried that it could happen for a third time.
The Red Cross has established shelter at Jade Street Community Center and New Brighton Middle School.
