Motorcyclist Dies After Being Ejected During I-580 Collision in Oakland

A motorcyclist died late Friday night after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle on Interstate Highway 580, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 10:55 p.m., officers responded to a report of a collision in the highway's westbound lanes near Lakeshore Avenue, the CHP said.

After a preliminary investigation, officers determined a Honda Civic was traveling on the highway when, for an unknown reason, the Honda spun out and came to rest in two westbound lanes. A Ford Windstar and a Toyota Prius that were both approaching the stopped Honda began to slow down, according to CHP officials.

A Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling behind the Ford and Toyota did not slow down in time and collided first with the rear of the Toyota and then with the rear of the Ford, CHP officials said.

The impact of the collision caused the male motorcyclist and female passenger on the motorcycle to both be ejected, according to the CHP.

The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The female passenger was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Ford and a passenger both suffered minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital, according to the CHP.

Officers closed the westbound lanes of the highway for about two and a half hours as they investigated the collision, CHP officials said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the incident is asked to contact the CHP at (707) 551-4100.
