Two Campers Injured by Falling Tree in Mount Diablo State Park

A tree fell on campers Friday night at the Live Oak Campground in Mount Diablo State Park.

The incident occurred at roughly 10:40 p.m., injuring two male campers.

Mount Diablo State Park ranger John Hardcastle said that the tree was over 2 feet in diameter. It is unknown why it fell, he added.

One man, who is believed to be in his late 30s to early 40s, was treated for scrapes and bruises, authorities said. The other man, who is 47 years old, sustained a serious head injury and was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Neither man was identified as of Saturday evening.

The camp site was closed but the rest of the Live Oak Campground is open as are the other two grounds in the state park.

NBC Bay Area's Chuck Coppola and Stephen Wheelock contributed to this report.
