Mountain Lion Researchers Study Big Cats as Another Bay Area Sighting Is Reported

University of California, Santa Cruz researchers have determined the drought is driving mountain lions closer to populated areas.

Yet another mountain lion sighting was reported near a Peninsula neighborhood on Friday. The big cat was seen near the Green Hills Golf Course in Millbrae, just blocks from Interstate 280.

Biologists working on UC Santa Cruz’s “Puma Project” have trained some captive cats to walk on treadmills for motion studies. Special collars also track and measure how the animals move.

All the data creates profiles which shed light on how and where local mountain lions interact with humans.
