The 24-year-old Perez, of Berkeley, is scheduled to return to court Oct. 16. His lawyers have said his actions stemmed from a mental breakdown.

Tamara Aparton, a spokeswoman for the public defender's office, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Perez was released on the condition he continue to receive mental treatment.

Aparton sas Perez must also stay away from the 16th Street BART Station and the two witnesses who complained.
