As part of an $18-million traffic plan to cut congestion in the South Bay, a series of new metering lights began to flicker in earnest on Tuesday, in an effort that Caltrans said could cut commute times by between two and seven minutes.
A total of 17 lights are now on along US Highway 101 in both north and south directions from Monterey Road in Gilroy to the 101/Highway 85 interchange in south San Jose.
Caltrans expects there to be some growing pains with the new lights: Drivers should feel the biggest adjustments and potential slowdowns at the Monterey Street onramp in Gilroy with periods of three-minute waits.
