Newark Youths Unite Neighborhood with Earthquake Preparedness

A group of East Bay youngsters are making sure their neighbors are ready for the next big earthquake.

Parisa Deokule, a 15-year-old team leader, said the group noticed a lot of people who did not have earthquake kits, which inspired their efforts.

"Six months back we collected some data from all of our neighbors about what materials they have to aid us during an earthquake," Parisa said.

Now, six month later, Parisa along with three other young minds are the driving force behind the earthquake emergency team in a quiet Newark neighborhood.

Parisa's father challenged her to come up with a way to organize the neighborhood in case of a disaster.

"If you could have been here a couple years back, nobody knew each other," said Nishi Deokule, Parisa's father. "But now most of the neighbors know each other.

And because of the young team, neighbors also know where to go and what to do if something major happens.

The team has a list of names, contact numbers and a list of neighborhood supplies.
