Report of Abandoned Baby in Oakland Turns Out to Be False

A report focusing on an abandoned baby who was reportedly found in Oakland Tuesday morning turned out to be far from the truth, police said.

The baby was originally discovered by two women in the 2600 block of 19th Avenue before being taken to a local hospital. Police later learned that the mother and her family falsely reported the abandonment because they were afraid of the repercussions that would come along with surrendering the newborn.

The mother recently gave birth to the baby and left the child on the sidewalk before coming clean to authorities Tuesday afternoon, police said.

"The newborn is a baby girl; she is absolutely adorable," Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said. "We're confident she will get a good home."

The infant is in the care of Child Protective Services and is in unharmed, police said.
