Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom took a shot at potential rival Jerry Brown on Saturday, saying Californians want to embrace the future, not the past.

The San Francisco mayor was greeted by thunderous applause as he addressed delegates at the state Democratic Party convention in Sacramento.

After announcing his candidacy this week, Newsom made his pitch to the party faithful by saying he represents the future, a clear swipe at Brown, who is considering a run.

Newsom, who is 41, said his candidacy will not just offer Californians "a stroll down memory lane."

Brown, who is three decades older than Newsom, said he is not yet ready to announce whether he intends to run for governor next year. He served two terms as governor in the 1970s and 1980s, and is now the state attorney general.
