Niners Are Tuning Up For Start of Training Camp

Veterans are scheduled to report on July 30 in Santa Clara, almost two weeks before first exhibition game

Chip Kelly showed with the Philadelphia Eagles and in his first offseason program with the 49ers that he has businesslike, no-nonsense, fast-paced and highly scheduled practice sessions.

But he can be unconventional, too. One thing Kelly likes to do is blast music – often the latest hip-hop hits – over loudspeakers to get his players used to loud environments and pump up the energy level. Reporters who cover the 49ers have noted that 49ers players seem to enjoy the music and even occasionally break out some dance steps between snaps.

After a few weeks of quiet time following the completion of the recent full-squad, mandatory minicamp, we now know that Kelly and his tunes will get cranked up again on Saturday, July 30, when veterans are due to report for the first full-squad practice July 31 at team facilities in Santa Clara.

That will give the team roughly two weeks to prepare for the first of four exhibition games against the Houston Texans on Aug. 14 at Levi’s Stadium. The other three preseason games will be Aug. 20 at the Broncos, Aug. 26 vs. the Packers at Levi’s Stadium and Sept. 1 in San Diego against the Chargers.

The 49ers also announced Thursday that to celebrate the team’s 70th anniversary, the team will return to Kezar Stadium in San Francisco for an Aug. 10 practice session and youth football exhibition that will be open to the public. The Niners say the practice will be an annual event at Kezar, the former home field of the 49ers. The team played its last game at Kezar in 1970.

About 9,000 fans will be allowed to attend the practice at Kezar. Fans can register for an online random drawing for tickets to the practice session at 49ers.com.
