No Charges For Richmond Cop Involved In Fatal Shooting

The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday that Richmond Police Officer Wallace Jensen acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Richard Perez on Sept. 14.

Wallace encountered Perez outside Uncle Sam's Liquors. Perez "attacked" Jensen, who shot and killed the "drunk" man as he lunged for his weapon, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Jensen fired three shots at Perez, whose blood alcohol content was 0.247, three times the legal limit for driving, according to the report.

In a federal wrongful death lawsuit filed against the city, Perez's family alleges that the man's last words were "don't shoot," and that Jensen tackled Perez before shooting him to death.

The death was the first fatal officer-involved-shooting in Richmond since 2007.
