No Holiday For BART Protests: Demonstrations Planned for Today, Thursday

Anonymous doesn't take breaks, especially when it's protesting BART. And it'll have some competition this week.

The shadowy "hacktivist" group will organize and stage another protest of the BART system tonight at 5 p.m., continuing its pledge to demonstrate against the transit system every Monday until the group's demands are met, according to the San Francisco Appeal online newspaper.

Not to be outdone, the separate group "No Justice, No BART" is planning its own demonstration for Thursday, according to reports.

Among the group's demands are a disarming of all BART police officers as well as the removal from duty of a BART spokesman.

"No Justice, No BART" was formed in the wake of the Jan. 1, 2009, fatal shooting death of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man, by a BART police officer. The group is also angry over the July 3 shooting death of Charles Hill, a 45-year old transient, at the Civic Center Station. Anonymous's chief beef is BART's decision to shut down cell phone service on its platforms on Aug. 11 to thwart an aborted protest.

Protest organizers are asking participants to stay away from paid fare areas. Last Monday's protest resulted in the arrests of two people at the Embarcadero station, but no stations were closed and all trains ran on time, BART officials said.

During the protest the previous week, two stations were shut down and more than 40 people were arrested.
