Hayward Working to Address Lack of Public Restrooms in Downtown Area

Hayward city leaders are looking into ways to provide more public restroom access in the downtown area.

The Daily Review newspaper reports there two public restrooms in downtown -- in the library and at City Hall. Both restrooms are closed at night, which is a problem for the area homeless.

Workers are "often faced with the unpleasant task of cleaning up human waste," according to the Review. Residents have told the city council the downtown area is in need of more public restrooms.

"Public defecation is an issue," Mayor Barbara Halliday told the paper. "It is happening."

City officials said the will consider ways to improve restroom access in the spring.
