Oakland Police Arrest 29 For Throwing Bricks, Bottles, Setting off Firecrackers

Oakland police arrested 29 people on New Year's Eve out of a crowd of about 130 who mostly protested peacefully in the downtown area Wednesday night, police said.

Officer Johnna Watson said about 10:30 p.m., some people began throwing bricks and bottles at officers between the 1700 and 2000 blocks of Broadway and Telegraph Avenue. Others tagged buildings, set off illegal fireworks and threw trash cans into the street.

Oakland police asked for help from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, Berkeley Police Department, Emeryville Police Department, San Leandro Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.

She said the arrests were mostly for vandalism, failure to disperse, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon.

Protests have been going on around the nation, including in Oakland, stemming from the grand juries in Missouri and New York who chose not to indict white officers for killing unarmed African-American men.
