Oakland Police Hiring Officers

A training academy is set for August.

If you're looking for a new career in law enforcement, the Oakland Police Department wants to hear from you.

It's accepting applications through Monday. You can either go online to apply or pick up an application at Oakland City Hall.  The entire hiring process is expected to take about six to nine months.

This is a big step forward.  The city of Oakland has had a tough time maintaining the number of police officers on the job.  One report suggests there are around 650 officers, down from 850 a few years ago.  The department has also had to reduce staffing.

Two academies are expected - one is slated to start in August.

This past March, nearly 1,000 people lined up in Oakland for a chance to land one of 50 spots.

Here are some minimum requirements you need to apply:

You should at least have a high school diploma or a G.E.D.

You must be at least 21 years old.

You need a valid California driver's license.

And you should not have a felony conviction or other convictions that would prevent you from carrying a gun.
