Police Shoot Suspect Who Rammed Patrol Cars, Led Officers on Chase From San Leandro to Oakland

A suspect is in grave condition after police opened fire to stop her during a stolen vehicle chase from San Leandro to Oakland Sunday evening, Oakland police said.

The chase began at 7:55 p.m. when two San Leandro police officers responded to a call for service in the vicinity of Halcyon Drive and Dillo Street in San Leandro.

One of the officers recognized the suspect's vehicle as stolen and the officers attempted to make a traffic stop, police said.

The vehicle's driver initially pulled over but then sped up and led the officers on a chase to the 9800 block of Springfield Street, a cul-de-sac in Oakland. Police said the driver rammed several parked cars and then multiple patrol vehicles and officers subsequently shot the suspect.

Police summoned emergency medical aid and the Oakland Fire Department and paramedics responded. The suspect was transported to a local hospital. A San Leandro police officer also suffered injuries during the incident and has been treated and released.

The stolen vehicle contained a passenger who was also taken to the hospital because she was involved in the collisions. She was treated and released and is being interviewed by Oakland investigators.

The Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section is investigating the incident, which is consistent with departmental policy. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the San Leandro Police Department's Professional Standards and Training Unit are conducting their own investigations.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
