Oakland Publication Launches Body Positive Campaign #BeyondBeauty

Wear Your Voice is making a Black Friday statement about body positivity.

The Oakland publication has launched a social media campaign branded #BeyondBeauty to celebrate women of all shapes, sizes, colors and abilities — and to demand that high-profile brands do the same.

"This Black Friday, remember that no one can sell your confidence," read one post to Twitter.

People are invited to share their definition of beauty on social media using the #BeyondBeauty hashtag.

"As a media publication, we understand the responsibility media plays in our lives," said editor in chief Ravneet Vohra in a statement.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Vohra cited, 47 percent of girls in 5th to 12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures while 69 percent of girls in the same grades reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape.

"As a mother of two young children," Vohra continued, "I want to make sure that the next generation of young people don't inherit our insecurities."
