Oakland Water Main Break Prompts Street Closures

Maintenance work on an East Bay Municipal Utility District aqueduct is believed to be behind a water main break in Oakland today that shut down several streets near the Oakland-Piedmont border, a district spokeswoman said.

A water main rupture was reported around 10:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Kingston Avenue, police said. The main break affected 35 properties in the area, including numerous apartment buildings, according to EBMUD spokeswoman Abby Figueroa.

Both Monte Cresta Avenue in the area of Kingston Avenue and Kelton Court and Kingston Avenue near the intersections of Monte Vista and Linda avenues remain closed this evening as crews work to repair the ruptured line.

The repairs are expected to be completed around 7 p.m., Fiugeroa said.

Police have established a safety zone around the main break because of cracks and possible sinkholes in the roadway and motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area.

Figueroa said the water main that burst dated back to 1910 and was among one of the district's oldest pipes.
