Oculus Flees SoCal, Moves to Silicon Valley to Be Closer to Facebook

Oculus VR has fled sunny Southern California for the friendlier confines of Silicon Valley -- and closer to parent company Facebook.

The company told the Orange County Register on Monday that it had "quietly" relocated to Menlo Park from Irvine. Oculus' famous product is the Oculus Rift, the virtual reality goggles.

Oculus, founded by 22-year old Palmer Luckey in 2014, was bought out by Facebook for $2 billion about six months ago. Luckey supposedly has a suite of offices on the top floor of Facebook's main headquarters.

The company will keep a presence of some kind in Irvine, but it appears that the top talent, including the engineers, have all moved north to Silicon Valley.

Oculus has 250 employees spread around offices in Seattle, Korea and Dallas, the newspaper reported.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly a big believer in the goggles' utility beyond video games, thinking that they could be a tool for doctors and in school classrooms.
