Off-Duty CHP Officer Dies in North Bay Crash

The California Highway Patrol released more information about a crash that killed an off-duty CHP officer in American Canyon on Friday evening.

According to the CHP, the officer who died in the collision was a 38-year-old man from Napa.

On Saturday, the Vallejo Times Herald sourced the Solano County Coroner’s office and identified the officer.

CHP officials said a 39-year-old man from Esparto was heading east on state Highway 12 near Fairfield in his pickup truck around 5:45 p.m. Friday.

After entering the left turn lane at 1687 Jameson Canyon Road, the driver spotted the motorcyclist approaching on his right, according to the CHP.

The driver sped up in an attempt to avoid the motorcyclist, but the officer collided with the back of the truck and was thrown from the motorcycle and onto the front of a Honda traveling behind the truck, officials said.

The officer was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving paramedics.

CHP officials said that drugs and alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the fatal crash.
