An off-duty San Francisco sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a 17-year-old boy who allegedly tried to rob the deputy and his girlfriend near Lake Merritt in Oakland early today, according to Oakland police.
The deputy and his girlfriend told police that they were in the 300 block of Van Buren Avenue in Oakland's Adams Point neighborhood at about 1:34 a.m. today when the suspect approached them and demanded money at gunpoint, according to police.
Police said he believed his life and his girlfriend's life were being threatened so he discharged his firearm and struck the suspect, an Alameda resident whose name wasn't released.
The 17-year-old boy received medical attention at the scene and then was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, according to police.
The deputy sheriff and his girlfriend weren't harmed. Police said officers recovered a replica firearm at the scene.
Investigators said they believe the teenager was involved in at least two other robberies in the area shortly before the shooting.
