Offbeat Offerings On For This Weekend

Mike Inouye has a web-rrific calendar of events for what is going on this weekend.

When I say “weekend” and “date night”, what do you think of? That’s right… Milpitas!

Well, Friday night head over to the "Standards of Excellence" kitchen showroom (as if that  didn't set expectations already) and cook up some romance at their "Date Night Couples Cooking Class."

In three short hours (6:30pm - 9:30pm)  you'll work in teams learning technique, helping prepare some of the night's menu and you'll make it hot, in the oven, in the literal sense.

BYOB if you want to have wine with the menu that includes "Spice Crusted Salmon Skewers with Harissa Yogurt Dipping Sauce" and "Mini Apple, Roquefort and Caramelized Onion Pies with Honey."

How's that for a artwork on a plate?

Remember to use your napkin.

In fact, you can still work on that too thru Saturday. That's the deadline for  the "30th Annual Napkin Art Contest" at Mama's Royal Cafe in Oakland. Having gone on for three decades, this contest is no joke. I strongly urge you to check out the past entries they show online. Way better than the scrawls I create for my kids as we wait for dinner. You won't be able to believe some of this work.

Napkin goes to the left of the plate.

And being on the left edge of the continent as we are, just a hop away from the Hawaiian Islands, we have it pretty good. Still, it's a four-hour hop. Hayward is much closer and Sunday you can head over there for your dose of "Aloha". That's right, the 18th Ukulele Festival of Northern California is on from 10am - 5:30pm.

There are more than 300 performers involved this year, you'll undoubtedly be able to get something wtih Spam in it, and you could even win tickets to Hawaii if you enter their giveaway.

If you win, remember to tell me "Mahalo."
