Crews demolishing the old eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay have hit a milestone.
The Contra Costa Times reports that they have sliced the span in half. The gap is not wide enough to be easily seen yet.
But it should become more visible over the next few weeks, as crews remove more bridge pieces.
The old span was replaced by a new, $6.4 billion self-anchoring suspension bridge that opened to commuters last year. Officials have set aside $300 million for the demolition and expect to complete the work in three to five years.
