One teenage girl was killed and another was critically injured Tuesday after they were struck by a vehicle while walking along a road in Oakley, police said.

The Oakley Police Department responded to a report of an accident with major injuries at East Cypress Road near Bethel Island Road about 2:45 p.m. Officers arrived to find the two injured girls, one of which was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The second victim, a 16-year-old, was transported to a hospital and was in critical but stable condition, police said.

The identities of the victims were not released, and the collision was under investigation.

According to witnesses, the girls were walking westbound on East Cypress when a female motorist driving erratically hit them then left the roadway and came to rest about 150 yards down the road, police said.

Officers detained the driver and said she was cooperating with the investigation. It was not known whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

East Cypress Road was closed during the investigation. Traffic in the area was being diverted to Jersey Island and Dutch Slough roads, police said.
