Original Mel's Drive-In Could Make Way For Housing

Old restaurant seeks new lease as landlord eyes residential units.

Hamburgers or housing?

There's more demand for the latter in San Francisco nowadays, which means the original location of Mel's Drive-In may be on its way out, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

The Richmond District location of Mel's, at 3355 Geary Boulevard, has been in business for more than 50 years. The building, however, recently changed hands for the first time "in six decades," the newspaper reported, and the new owner has yet to give the restaurant a new lease.

However, the new landlord has filed preliminary plans for a 44-foot tall residential building with 23 new units, the newspaper reported. The plans also call for ground floor commercial space, which could be Mel's.
