A pedestrian struck and killed late Thursday on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 39-year-old Roy Gonzalez.

The California Highway Patrol received reports at about 8:55 p.m. Thursday of a pedestrian down on U.S. 101 at Old Bayshore Highway near East Brokaw Road.

The driver of a 2007 Hyundai, David Jellesed, 51, of Gilroy, hit the pedestrian but was not arrested, the CHP reported.

Emergency crews attempted to provide medical assistance to Gonzalez, of San Jose, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

The Old Bayshore Highway on-ramp to southbound U.S. Highway 101 and the two right lanes of U.S. Highway 101 were closed until 12:50 a.m. Friday.
