A Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officer rescued a female gray and white pit bull from the side of Highway 152 after spotting the dog tied to a mile marker with a belt and prong collar.

The dog, found Tuesday and thought to be about two years old, had no identification tags or microchips and was abandoned without shelter, food or water, according to a news release.
