A 62-year-old woman who was shot by Hayward police Tuesday night has died.

The shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. at an apartment complex near Foothill Boulevard and Grove Way.

Police say they went to the complex after the woman called 911 several times.

Officers say, when they arrived, she pulled out a gun, moved toward the officers in a threatening way, and refused to drop the gun. One of the officers opened fire.

Stephanie Gray, who lives at the apartment complex, said she heard a woman yell, which was followed by multiple gun shots.

Neither the woman nor the officer involved have been identified, but the department did confirm the officer in the shooting has been with the Hayward Police Department for one year.
