Police Make Arrests in Shooting Outside Bayfair Center in San Leandro

San Leandro police say they have made arrests in connection with a shooting at Bayfair Center last week.

James Williams, 22, of Oakland was arrested on suspicion with assault with a deadly weapon, among other firearm-related charges. Andre Winn, 29, of Oakland was arrested on charges including being an ex-felon in possession of firearms. Police said that Winn is not directly related to the shooting but lives with Williams. A juvenile was also arrested on the suspicion of the same charges as Williams, police said.

Police seized several firearms, including an assault rifle, many of them with 30-round magazines.

The arrests follow the mall shooting, which occurred at 6:40 p.m. on Jan. 14 in the parking lot near the Old Navy and Bed Bath and Beyond stores, was not believed to be a random act, according to Lt. Robert McManus.

People in a car and two men on foot in the parking lot appear to have exchanged gunfire, but no injuries were reported, police said last week.

The suspects all fled the scene before police arrived. Two men were detained and interviewed by police after a search of the mall, but those men were determined to be only witnesses.
